Have you heard of The Whaling Bar? It was a historic cocktail lounge that opened in 1949 in La Jolla at the La Valencia Hotel. Apparently, it was quite the spot back in the day.
The Whaling Bar regularly played host to star-studded parties and notable regulars, including Theodor Geisel, novelist Raymond Chandler, and Hollywood luminary and founder of the La Jolla Playhouse’s famed summer theatre, Gregory Peck.
It closed about 10 years ago, but recently reopened, so we HAD to go check it out!
We were not sure what to expect since we never visited this iconic spot before it closed. Because of the name, we had pictured more of a ‘bar’ type of setting. We poured in with a group of friends and realized it’s more of a sit-down sort of experience. It would make an amazing spot for a special occasion like an anniversary or date night. I’d say perfect for 2-6 people.
Amazing cocktails. A unique menu. And a very nice blend of history, modern luxury and contemporary elegance.
The service was exceptional and we enjoyed some great entertainment from a magician who provided some table-side magic tricks for us.
Again, we weren’t expecting to sit-down or have dinner. So, everyone just ordered a cocktail. We had:
GREEN DRAGON
Avocado Tequila, Verde Poblano Chile, Toasted Rice Coconut, Lime, Pineapple
COVE TEA
Earl Gray Gin, Cinnamon, Grapefruit, Lime, Seltzer
Both were delicious. Highly recommend you go check it out sometime. It’s a great spot to start your night or to make reservations for dinner or a special occasion.
If you’ve never been inside the La Valencia – definitely go take a peak while you’re there. They have a nice lounge that offers amazing views of the ocean and if you catch it during sunset – lucky you!
